Recycled Log Stereo

I needed tunes for the greenhouse. I was outside in my driveway splitting wood for our fireplace when I saw this one piece and the beauty of the grain got me to thinking...
I have a couple car stereos that are lacking cars at the moment, so why not see what I can put together from what I have lying around? So far, I've purchased nothing. Everything was stuff I've had "left over":

- Log, cut from one side of the "Y" split and including a bit of bark
- Clarion DXZ865MP
- Infinity Kappa 4"
- Infinity Kappa 6x9
- old 300W ATX PC power supply

First, I made a bunch of plunge cuts with the chainsaw. I gauged the correct depth by always going to the near-edge of the "H" in "HUSQVARNA".

 • I used a jigsaw to cut the holes, a power hand-planer to make it flat, a belt sander to make it smooth (60, 80, then 120), and a reciprocating sander for the final smoothing (220 grit).

 • This is why I couldn't bring myself to turn this particular piece into firewood. Look at that grain!
 • After a test run, I decided that just having the two 4" speakers provided too "tinny" a sound, so I added some 6x9's as well.
 • Up and running with a couple coats of poly on it.
 • It lives in our greenhouse, where I hope its recycled nature and natural nature is appropriate.
 • Refinements to be added:
+ 12v cigarette lighter port, for powering iPod and the like
+ feet (replace the rocks currently stuck under it to keep it level)
+ external battery (old car battery)
+ constant charge via small solar panel
I have all this stuff hanging around, I just need to install it.
